Manager's Ramblings
« on: March 18, 2006, 10:08:18 pm »
Somehow I think this could easily swing between here and Wikkity. Meh.

Anyways, first some background.

One of the managers at the store where I work occasionally comes to the back door for a smoke break. (This is technically illegal according to the handbook; not that he cares.) Sometimes I think there's a little something-something extra in those cigs he smokes; they smell worse than normal cigarettes for one, and some of the things he says on those smoke breaks can be pretty weird. Like today's little rambling he gave.

He called me to the back room when he was going on one of his smoke breaks. I thought I was in trouble at first. Apparently, he only wanted to share some of his "logic." (You'll understand the use of quotes eventually.)

He began by asking about my familiarity with BitTorrent. Now I haven't used it, but obviously I've heard of it. He goes on to explain about the basics, and goes into an example of BTing a movie, having it separated into parts which are later combined into the whole. Obviously all the files are more or less combinations of 0's and 1's, as anyone decently versed in computers would know. (Silly binary.) Now once you combine the pieces in order, you have your finished movie.

At this point, I was wondering where he was going with this.

I was sorry I did. Because then he says something along the lines of "Couldn't you just write up a binary file (of 0's and 1's) and be able to create the movie on your own?" I was slightly weirded out by this. I mean, it might be possible, but highly improbable. (And I mean highly.)

And then the inevitable happens. "Then wouldn't it be possible, with luck, to create a binary file and have a movie that hasn't even been created yet?"

At that line, I think my mind exploded.

Discuss.

Intriguing...

But the odds would involve a lot of zeros, no pun intended.  But yeah, that does seem possible.  Crazy...

As you can see, I'm not great at discussing.

Type in 1s and 0s yourself? Pssh. Why not just turn the computer on, open Notepad and let quantum tunnelling rearrange the electrons in the CPU to write the movie?

Of course, it'll actually happen about once in the lifetime of a zillion universes, but hey.

I rest my case. (Funny how he claims he's down to a pack a day, though he also says he smokes constantly on his hour-long lunch, could probably drink a half gallon of orange juice on his way home to "counteract" the lung cancer crap which I call BS on, and sucks on 3 or 4 cigs combined on those smoke breaks I mentioned.)

If you don't want people to treat you like you're stupid, then your best defence is to not be stupid.

Smoking is bad for people. Really.

And yes, the chance of creating a movie using a binary file of 0s and 1s is about 1 in 7.392 decillion.

This has nothing to do with Shakespeare. :(

Who cares if it's a similar concept.

Me: Do you find it odd that CF's top two loves rank last in his Bouncy rankings? x_x
mike89: yes. yes i do.
mike89: but then i find CF odd.
Me: so do I.

I call BS. </obligatory>

To TEM, not you RPG.

So yeah. This isn't that manager but rather my department's assistant manager laying down the BURN on one of my coworkers. I happened to walk in on their conversation. (Note: Both are male.) (Other note: Not an exact transcript, but it's the basic idea.)

Coworker: "Girls can't do that handshake."
Asst.Manager: "I can't do that handshake."
CW: "Well, except (female bagger who has shortish hair)."
(unimportant stuff goes here)
AM: "Is this the one you were flirting with?"
CW: "No, I wouldn't do that."
AM: "You were saying something like 'Look at my big box of tortilla chips!' Now I don't know about you, but I wouldn't go bragging about my 'tortilla chips.' They're flimsy and break easily."

In short, BURN.

Though on the subject of the manager in question for this topic, he has said some disturbing things recently. For example, when the floor was done being waxxed, he said something about being able to lie down naked on it. (Not exactly something I wanted to hear about...)

Heh... I remember you telling us about that one in the chat one time. I personally didn't need the memory revived again, but that's just me.

Also, BURN.
